Who we are:
Before NUD was formed in 1996, in Nebbi District Persons with disabilities were not involved in Planning and implementating programmes meant to benefit them. Mainstream programmes and the environment were designed/constructed in a manner that depicted lack of recognition and sensitivity to the needs of PWDs, the services provided emphasized separation of PWDs from the society and were seen as preserve for charity endeavours. The scenario obscured and isolated disability issues from the society’s main concerns, divided PWDs along largely medical lines, created dependency on institutions; stifled individual initiatives, killed the morals, self esteem and confidence amongst PWDs. In most cases PWDs were kept in doors.
From available records and information, the idea of forming the District Association started in around early 1990s when some NUDIPU Executives visited the district to talk to the PWDs about their rights and the need of coming together to form one voice where they can be heard. Although the momentum was lost during the years, the visit of ADD officials rescued the PWDs which resulted in the formation of Nebbi Union of Disabled in 1996. During the General Assembly held that year an Executive Committee was elected to spearhead the Union
We are a network organisation of disabled persons that was formed in 1989 initially serving the entire greater Nebbi (including Nebbi, Pakwach and Zombo districts). Currently following the autonomy of Pakwach and Zombo as independent districts, NUD is now more concentrated in 13 sub-counties of Nebbi and 3 divisions of Nebbi municipal councils. Since then, the membership has grown to over 145 registered group membership from diverse disability background (related to mobility, vision, hearing or any other type). The primary objective of NUD is to build the capacity of people with disabilities in Nebbi, improving the quality of their lives.
